Omschrijving van het werk

Stoneware Super Heroes My work is often a reflection of events in my life, a three dimensional diary. My relationship with my children and the up and coming Young British Artists (YBAs) of the 1990s formed my inspiration in this project. I have used parts of plastic super heroes in these anthropomorphic vases (arms for handles, feet for feet, belly buttons in the body of the vase) to explore the boundaries between art and kitsch. Amphoras of a crisis age My most recent work has been inspired by a trip to Greece and the impressions that this country in economic crisis made on me. ‘Amphoras of a crisis age’ are the result, I have used traditional elements like the Greek earthenware red and black figure techniques, Cycladic earthenware, the burial sites of the kings of Macedon, including the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great in Vergina, the monasteries in Meteora and also blue ballpoint drawings of Yugio characters made by my son on the journey. Packaging Pots for Sunday Best The shapes of these ceramic pieces are taken from cardboard support-packaging. This ‘disposability’ is contrasted with a finish –glazing- which refers to my grandma’s China tea service that was kept in a glass cabinet and only brought out on Sundays for special visitors. The combination creates a disconcerting and comical image that comments on our present day society: dedicated to fast consumerism yet soaked in tradition. Multiples In the realization of my unique projects some forms arise that are suitable for repetition by means of a plaster mould. This has led to a number of, usually functional, designs, such as the ‘Towers of Delft’ tulip vases, the ‘Manhattan’ salt and pepper set and the ‘Time Flies When You’re Having Fun’ clocks.
